Bank feeds and a client portal that chases documents for you

The slowest part of month-end is usually not the bookkeeping. It is waiting on a client who has not sent the receipts, then emailing them again about the three charges nobody can identify. The portal exists to shorten that loop.

Bank transactions as drafts

Clients can connect a bank account through Plaid, and imported transactions arrive as draft lines in the same ledger as extracted documents. Keeping both in one place is the point: the review step is where a transaction gets matched to its receipt, and that is difficult if the two live in separate systems.

Coverage is worth checking per client. Plaid's institution support and statement retrieval are stronger for United States banks than Canadian ones, so for many Canadian clients a Drive folder or direct upload remains the more dependable channel. Both paths lead to the same ledger.

A portal with nothing to set up

Clients reach the portal through a magic link. There is no password to reset, no account for your staff to provision, and no software for the client to learn, which matters when the client is a contractor answering email from a truck.

From that link they can upload documents, connect a bank account, and answer clarifying questions. The portal is scoped to their own file and nothing else.

Questions attached to the transaction

When a bookkeeper cannot tell what a charge was for, they raise a clarifying question against that line and the client answers it in the portal. The answer stays attached to the transaction, so the reasoning is on the file rather than in an inbox. Six months later, when someone asks why a line was coded the way it was, the answer is on the row.

Common questions

Do clients need an account to use the portal?
No. Access is by magic link, so there is no password to manage and nothing for your staff to provision.
Do Canadian banks work with the Plaid connection?
Coverage varies by institution and is generally better for United States banks. For many Canadian clients, a linked Drive folder or direct upload of statements is more reliable, and both feed the same ledger.
Are bank transactions posted automatically?
No. They import as drafts and follow the same review and approval path as extracted documents.
